Cloverfield and Super 8: Related after all?

Cloverfield

Warning: if you haven’t seen Cloverfield, or if you haven’t been following the Super 8 ARG (alternate reality game), then some portion of this article might contain spoilers for you. Also, there are a few references to the TV Series: “Lost“, especially it’s finale.

Let me tell you first that I loved Cloverfield. It has fascinated me since the first trailer went viral. What I like most of all was the First Person perspective of the movie. And while some people might argue that “no person in their right mind would continue filming while on the run from a monster”, I’d say it might just be a reflex from the shock. I do some filming of my own sometimes, and it’s amazing how you keep looking at the LCD screen, instead of the events in front of the camera, to see what’s going on. So I think it’s fairly realistic.

Not From space.

Anyway, on to the good stuff. I didn’t participate in the ARG, but I did follow all the findings. And one thing I recently found out was about the final clip in the movie: Something fell from the sky near Coney Island. When you Google this, the main consensus seems to be, that it was the monster falling from space into the ocean. I did some more research, and it appears it wasn’t the monster. Apparently, it was a Tagruato satellite. This fact was also in the ARG. Also it was confirmed by JJ Abrams that it wasn’t the monster.

Where did it come from?

The early theory on this seems to be correct: It came from the ocean. Most of my information about the cloverfield monster comes from this wiki. It appears it was an unknown species of sea creatures, that was apparently trapped a very long time ago. And appeared to have a very long time span. Before it got stuck it fed on a huge amount of “Seabed Nectar”, the secret ingredient to Tagruato’s “Slusho”. The Seabed nectar seems to increase cell division and growth, causing the creature to grow out of proportion. When the monster got trapped it entered some sort of hibernation-like state, only to be woken up by Tagruato when they were about to harvest the seabed nectar. It got scared and headed for New York, the rest is “history”.

The Super 8 trailer, and Lost

What exactly happened in the “Super 8″ trailer isn’t very clear, other than the fact that a freight train derails after hitting a truck, and “something” is trying to get out. Everyone immediately thought this was the Cloverfield monster, or at least a creature of the same species. However, JJ Abrams denies this. So the theory is debunked right? I personally don’t think so. I think JJ Abrams might be lying to keep the rumors going. Being a fan of “Lost” I have been puzzling, to try to find out what happened on the Island since day one. One theory that came up, was that they were all dead and they were in some sort of “limbo”. This has been denied from the beginning, and even though it is not completely accurate, the people actually DID find themselves in “limbo”, after they left the island, or died there. The Island was actually real, the alternate reality in the final season, was not. So maybe JJ Abrams sometimes “bends the truth” a little? I don’t know for sure, but if he is, the following could be the link between Cloverfield and Super 8.

The Super 8 ARG

In the Super 8 ARG a website was found about fish. There is a journal about the Coelacanth. A rare prehistoric fish, that may still live in the ocean. The ARG is still going on, so this is pure speculation: but I think the search for this fish may result in the discovery of a “monster-like creature”. Tie this in with the name of another Super 8 related site: “Scariest thing I ever saw .com”, and you get the point I’m making.

Conclusion

I know I cannot be sure about all this, and as long as the ARG is running, new facts may pop up that will completely debunk my theory. But for now this is how I feel about it. I for one would LOVE to know more about the Cloverfield monster and if Super 8 is a sort of prequel, that would be awesome. If it’s not, no biggie, I think I’m going to love Super 8 anyway. And maybe… maybe there will someday BE a Cloverfield 2, and we will all know what happened.
